Home Grand Canyon, Part II Grand Canyon, Part III
The Grand Canyon is truly GRAND!
We started out Wednesday afternoon fom the North Rim on the North Kaibab
trail. After each of us skinning a knee, the first night was spent on the trail because it got dark. The next day we passed Roaring Springs
and the pump house and spent the second night at Cottonwood Camp. While at Cottonwood, we took a side-trip to the beautiful Ribbon Falls.
On Friday morning, we set out for Bright Angel Campground and Phantom Ranch. Along the way, we stopped to play in the icy cold creek that flowed along the trail. The cold drinks at Phantom Ranch were a welcomed treat.
On Saturday morning, bright and early, we headed toward Indian Gardens. This meant we crossed several bridges and the Colorado River. We were not scheduled to stop at Indian Gardens but we did. (Thank goodness!) We were able to spend the night in the "overflow" section (aka: Day Use/Amphitheater Area) and got a much needed rest.
Sunday morning, we set off again toward the South Rim. It was a gruelling hike upward, but we FINALLY made it, despite the heat, the mules, and screaming muscles. Unfortunately, we only got one poor photo of a condor perched on a cliff, although we did see three pairs of them flying over us very near the end of the trail.

The cold water flows into the creek. This is the Canyon's water supply that is pumped up to the North Rim and South Rim. |
